The Kemmerich homestead circa 1913. One is of the Kemmerich ranch house, taken in about 1913. Photo courtesy of Kemmerich descendant, who explains: "This is of the front of the house, which faced the Skagit River--the "highway" when August built the house. Some details from my father, Alphonse Kemmerich: 'August Kemmerich, with the help of his uncle, Augustus Kemmerich, built his house on his homestead in Birdsview, Washington , close to the north bank of the Skagit River. He took up his homestead on February 14, 1878 and must have started the home soon after that, or when Augustus and his wife, Theresa, arrived from Iowa in 1883. They joined August on his homestead and helped him develop it and build the two-story ranch house that would serve as the Kemmerich family home for many years, until destroyed by fire in 1934. August bought the lumber for his home from Mr. Minkler's sawmill (on the south side of the river) and floated it down the Skagit to his homestead.'" Barbara: "I assume that the house was completed before August went to Chicago and returned with a bride, Barbara Hommerding, in April, 1884. Family records say that Augustus and Theresa Kemmerich moved to Mt. Vernon when August and Barbara married." |
